Snowstorm in the night—
the children await the news
at the radio

Viscol în noapte –
copiii ascultă ştirile
la radio

Winter solstice—
the last passer-by
crossing by the slush

Solstiţiu de iarnă –
ultimul trecător
păşind prin zloată

Longest night—
the grandmother spins the wool
at the windows

Cea mai lungă noapte –
bunica toarce lână
la fereastră

Winter solstice—
listening to the rhapsody
on the old gramophone

Solstiţiu de iarnă -
ascultând rapsodia
la vechiul gramofon

Footmarks
on the frosted snow—
the shortest day

Urmele paşilor
pe zăpada îngheţată –
cea mai scurtă zi

At the trellis
a bird eats frosted grape—
the solstice’s day

Pe spalier
o pasăre mănâncă strugurele îngheţat –

Leaves fall
one by one from the branch—
first snow

Cad frunze
una câte una de pe ram –
prima zăpadă

Only a leaf
in the spider's web —
a rainy day

Numai o frunză
în plasa păianjenului –
zi ploioasă

Under the full moon
only a chrysanthemum —
rustle of leaves

Sub luna plină
numai o crizantemă –
foşnet de frunze

Leaves everywhere —
in the pitiless rain
the abandoned nest

Frunze peste tot –
în ploaia nemiloasă
cuibul abandonat

Wild cherry-tree —

Printre munţi
alaiul de nuntă -
plouă cu soare

Among the mountain
the wedding procession –
it is raining with sun

Nunta de aur –
mirele şi mireasa
ninşi de ani

Golden wedding –
the bridegroom and the bride
snowed from the years

Coroniţa miresei
din flori de câmp –
bunica lăcrimează

Bride’s coronet
from the wild flowers –
the grandma weeps

Nuntă veselă –
mireasa fără pantof
şi hoţul zâmbind

Lively wedding—
the bride without the shoe
and the thief smiling

El şi ea
aşteptând nunta de argint –
ninge

He and she
are waiting for the silver wedding—
it is snowing
